We need a list of all of the states in alphabetical order, simply stating whether a license is required or not.

If it is, refer to individual state for requirements.

    Wow!

    Darin,

What a great job you have done....and so quickly! You need a purple heart! A little Visine for those burning eyes and a good massage for the hands to loosen up the writers cramps should do it.

Outstanding work, would not have expected less from all I've read from your posts.

I need a summary topic of all state licensing requirements

I clicked on State Law under Maryland and have no clue where it took me - but it sure wasn't the state law for PI's in MD. Any idea where I can find what the licensing requirements are in MD?

    Thanks
    Rita

    Hi Ryan.

I moved your question from the Trainee Questions & Answers forum to the Licensing Laws for Investigators forum where the other state licenses are discussed.

Here's a link to the topic listing web links for licensing laws. Click here:

    Richard,

I merged your topic to this thread where you will find the answer to your questions. Darin has supplied the time to research and list these links. I'm confident you will find this thread very informative.

Please read everything you have access to. If time is a factor, try using the Search button to locate threads and posts by a specific word(s). I find the tool very valuable.

As for starting your own business, we have a special forum titled Establishing Your Own Private Investigative Agency discussing this subject. If you do not have access to that forum, check the requirements for the private forums. Then email usa@ipiu.org for access.

Unfortunately, the PI law link for Ohio is broken. That site is no longer available. However, I found a suitable replacement....

Go to ORC 4749, and you'll find the info.

    Washington, DC

I have found several sites with similar listings. Some links and info, of course, have changed.

The new number for the District of Columbia is 202-671-0500.

Their office is currently closed. I will find out more information from them when I call Monday (6/17/02) morning.

    Darin,

Incredibly detailed and helpful information. The links to state laws, PI organizations, etc. for every state in our country is a huge beneficial online library of PI resources. These links are particularly useful to newcomers unsure of where to acquire such knowledge and I'm still in awe at the vast resources available to us on these forums. Your efforts to compile this information are greatly appreciated. My printer is busily humming continuously and I'm creating new files to store this information for future reference, as well as eventual secure client files storage. I'm so looking forward to my prints, photos, etc. being processed and moving up to higher levels so I can continue to grow and learn in this fascinating new career. Thanks a bunch !

    State Approved Schools??

I recently contacted Arkansas Assn.of Private Investigators to find out which schools they had on their approval list.
I found out that they only list 1 school!!!

It is in Little Rock, and they don't approve of any of the online courses.

I'm hoping that someone from IPIU will be able to give me some advice, in requesting that they consider approving an online course.
In the event that they would consider this, which online courses does IPIU members, who have taken them, consider to be the best ones?

There aren't many IPIU members from my state, and I'm hoping that they will see this post and be able to help me.

I originally posted this under "education" but thought I might get a response from this forum before I do the other.

    Hi Nancy;
I contacted the Arkansas state police, which regulates licensing of private investigators, private security agencies and individuals or businesses offering security or investigative services for the Arkansas Board of Private Investigators and Private Security Agencies.

Unfortunatly, at the time I called, the person I needed to speak with had already gone home for the day.

Their phone number is (501) 618-8000.

Actually that is who I spoke to and they said there was only 1 school that was approved. It is located in Little Rock and they gave me the phone number to the school.
I was just thinking that I might be able to ask them to consider approving an online course as well.
I just wasn't sure which online course would be the best one to mention.
Thanks though for being thoughtfull enough to call the state police.

That's wierd having only one state approved school.
In Oklahoma its done mostly through the state vo-tech system, and the rest is done through a handful of private schools using state approved materials.

I found it unusual also. That is why I thought that maybe there would be an online school or course that they could take a look at, and maybe consider it for approval.
It really limits us in this state. I can't believe that they would only have the one, but since this post I've also talked to one of the board members, and they confirmed it.
Anyway, thanks for taking an interest in my post. You're so close to me, being from Oklahoma, that I thought you may answer the post.
I try really hard not to post questions, until I have exhausted all of the resources that I have, so that I don't clutter up the system. Try as hard as you can though I'm sure I will ask something that has been asked before sooner or later.
But I certainly won't do it intentionally.

    Diana,

I must be too tired. I read your comment as. "the wonderful sport IPIU provides". But, maybe this is sport, it certainly is fun.
