    Technical Support Please

Everytime I reply in the Members Introduction Lounge and type http://www.ipiu.org/forums/showthread.php?s=5008 it shows up correct. When I preview it it also is correct. When I submit it it comes up wrong. What is going on and how do I correct it? Anyone who can help me, please do.

    Thanks,
    Pat

Patti, I do not know at this point why do you type in that address. If you want to access the Introduction Lounge, this is the correct address: http://www.ipiu.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=45. Then, you click on the introduction of each member and go from there. Each reply or post has a new address excepting the established Forums or Sub-forums or Threads, which keep having the same address.

To learn how to handle this software, you can either take the free tutorial: http://www.ipiu.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13, or do as explained below.

Please scroll down the page (left side) until you find Posting Rules and click on vB Code & Smilies & IMG. Read those explanations.

Then scroll up the page until you find FAQ button and click on it. Read that part too. When you are done, please go to: Test Your Forum Writing Skills on This Forum, pick up a thread and start practicing. You will have a lot of fun while playing with these features, and also learn vB Code.

Also, if you want you can do copy & paste of a certain Forum/Thread address from your address line which is displayed at the top of your screen (click on that address so it gets highlighted; go to Edit and select Copy; go to the place you want to post it, click on Edit and chose Paste). Hope this helps.

    Hi Pat,
Are you referring to when you welcome a new member and you want to provide a link for them in your post? if so this is what I do.

    1. Copy the address of the link you want to use from the tool bar above.

    2. When you are ready to use it in your post click on the icon for inserting hyperlink. It is the roundish blue one next to the yellow square one, located obove the box where you are typing your text.

    3. A small box with appear. Type in the name of the link, example: Newcomer's do this first or FAQ. Then click OK.

    4. Another box will appear. Paste in the address you copied. Click OK.

    5. Use preview post before going further and you can check that you can see the link. It should look like this...
    Newcomers Do This First

6 You can then continue with your post.

Carmen has given you some great tips for some of the things that you may run into. Definately try this in your own practice thread first.

    Hope I helped. Good Luck!

    Thank you

    Carmen and Tammy,

I want to thank you both for the information. The question I was asking was what Tammy was talking about. I do appreciate both answers to my question and your time in trying to help me. Thanks!!!

Patti, the technical reason why your link didn't work is that you were leaving out an essential element which was the 'thread id' (=&threadid) command or link to tell the forum which thread to display. It was sort of a syntax problem. If you compare your link as shown here:

    http://www.ipiu.org/forums/showthread.php?s=5008

with Tammy's link as shown here:

    http://www.ipiu.org/forums/showthrea...&threadid=5008

    You'll see what I mean.

Her link was entitled Newcomers Do This First

instead of the actual URL name of http://www.ipiu.org/forums/showthrea...&threadid=5008. But they both take you to the same place. Yours was simply missing the =&threadid part.

To simplify posting links in future, just remember that this forum software asks you what you want to CALL a link in the first text box that appears. Then it asks you which link or URL you want to display in the next text box that appears. You can right click on any link you see or find anywhere on this forum and scroll down to "copy shortcut" which is the same thing as copying the link. Once the explorer text box comes up asking you which URL you want to display right click and paste in the URL which your copied. Hit ok and you're done!

    Hope that helps.

    Warren,

Thank you also. I couldn't figure out why I'd type one thing and it would come up different. Thought I was going nuts......lol. Too much reading and eyes going crossed.. lol I'll try that next time.

    Thanks again,
    Pat

You're most welcome Patti. I always trust copy/paste and rarely trust my own typing for that very reason.
