    Kansas City, Missouri

Apparently, the State of Missouri does not require a P.I. license however, the city of Kansas City does require a license and I am wondering if anyone knows what the requirements are for obtaining a PI License in KCMO.

    John,

What a bizarre concept - the city requires a license, but the state does not.

    I wish you well.

The state of Missouri has passed a new law requiring a state issued PI License, starting in late spring or early summer. We will have more details on this later. So you may wish to wait to get a state license rather than a city license.

Ok, I just completed my first assignment on my own....

I could not get a responce from my previous questions on what it takes to get a PI license in Kansas City Missouri so I did some research that took me a little while to conclude and here is a link that gives the current bill summary.

    KCMO . . PI LIcense

Thank you John for your research.

On the subject of KC / MO.

I just went to see about a PI / Security gun license at the Blue Springs Police Dept. I was told that they do not issue this type of license. Actually, almost no one even new where I could go to get a license. Thankfully a seasoned officer gave me a number to call. It seems that I have to call Jackson City to get a gun license. I was given a number to call but when I called no one answered the phone. . . I will follow up.
    Strange, this Missouri. . .

    License in MO

Thanks for asking, John. I had a similar question, although I'm in ST. Louis.
Mine was: when I'm finished with training will I need a MO. License

    Hi Nancy,

As I understand, Starting In August of 2004 you will be required to have a state license, the link that I provided in the above post gives you the requirements that will have to have to obtain a Missouri Private Investigators License.

I hope this will answer your question.

    Best regards,

Information on SB 750 can be found at:
    http://www.senate.state.mo.us/04INFO/bills/SB750.htm

Thus far, it has only received a hearing in committee.

As a follow up to the license law in Missouri I sent an email to the Missouri senate in regard to this very bill. You can see the response that I got back just this morning. So there still is no license needed in Missouri as of this date.

    Hi Everyone,

Although the State of Missouri Requires no PI License, Certain Cities within the state do. Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, St.Joesph and possibly more require Licensing and these cities currently have the power to regulate them until the senate bill passes.

Thank you very much for the information, John. But I have a question regarding one specific quote from the bill.

The quote is taken from the information you provided from

    http://www.house.state.mo.us/bills041/bills/sb750.htm

"Persons must also provide proof of liability insurance of at least $1 million..."

How is the best way to obtain this amount of insurance? Are we expected to individually pay for this insurance or is it something that a business can cover? I am not entirely sure how the bill will work in this respect. Any thoughts?

    Insurance..

    Hi James,

If you plan on working for yourself as a Private Investigator you will have to purchase your own Liability insurance.

Currently, I am establishing my Kansas State Private Detectives license and am getting quotes for required insurance. There are lots on underwriters out there that are writing policys for Private investigators.

If you plan to work for an Agency you most likely will work under the Agency license and there insurance.

I am going to get my Kansas License first and then apply for the Missouri License.

    Hope this answers your questions.

    Best regards,

Thanks for the information on insurance John. I am still not entirely sure how the license for Missouri will work in general. But I guess we shall see in the next few months. I will be watching the status of this bill very closely.

    Thanks again

HI, it appears that the previous posts were some time ago. Does anyone know for sure about Missouri PI license procedures now?

    Here is the latest:

No licensing required on the state level,

But the following cities have their own City PI License:

    Kansas City
    St Louis
    Joplin
    St Joseph
    Springfield

Private investigator businesses which are located outside of the above referenced cities should contact their local city hall and/or county clerk's office and local law enforcement agencies for any possible licensing/permit regulations.

    Missouri Revised Statutes
    Chapter 84
Police Departments in St. Louis and Kansas City
    Section 84.340

    Missouri
    P.O. Box 720
    Jefferson City, MO 65102

    August 28, 2000
Board of police - power to regulate private detectives (St. Louis):

The police commissioner of the said cities shall have power to regulate and license all private watchmen, private detectives and private policemen, serving or acting as such in said cities, and no person shall act as such private watchman, private detective or private policeman in said cities without first having obtained the written license of the president or acting president of said police commissioners of the said cities, under pain of being guilty of a misdemeanor.

(1974) Held constitutional as not being an unlawful delegation of legislative power nor as to being discriminatory in that police officers of the city are not required to be licensed or pay fee when acting as a watchman. ABC Security Service Inc. v. Miller (Mo.), 514 S.W.2d 521.
