    PA License

    Hi Chun,
Good question. Welcome to IPIU. You'll love the threads. There is much information to learn and visit the fun threads also!
I would like to take a stab at the answer for you concerning PA. PI license laws, if I may.

Detective Act of 1953, as amended:
"Every such applicant, if he be a person in the case of a partnership, association, or corporation, at lease one member of such partnership, association, or corporation, has been regularly employed as a detective, or shall have been a member of the U.S. government investigative service, a sheriff, or member of a city police department of a rank or grade higher than that of patrolman, for the period of not less than three years.

"The application/petition shall state the full name, age, residence, present and previous occupations, of each person or individual; citizen of U.S.; address of principal place of business and any branch office, bureau, agency, sub-agency; affidavits signed by at least five (5) reputable citizens attesting to the good character of applicant; if the applicant is a corporation, the amount of the corporation's outstanding paid up capital stock and whether paid in cash or property and if in property, the nature of the same, and accompanied by a certified copy its certificate of incorporation; two (2) photographs of each individual and corporate officer (passport size); two (2) fingerprint cards for each individual/corporate officer; Corporate Bond in the sum of $10,000 executed to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; Preliminary and Final Order of Court for Judge to sign.

Present Original Application/Petition to the Court of Common Pleas Motions Judge for hearing date.

Copy of Application and Order with hearing date set for District Attorney's Detective Bureau and one (1) set of fingerprints.

Original Application and Order with hearing date set with fingerprint cards and two (2) passport size photos to be filed with Clerk of Courts office.

Bond in the sum of $10,000 to be filed in the Clerk of Courts office.

After approval of license, fee of $205 for individual, $305 for corporation, to be received by the Clerk of Courts office.

    hi DJ,

thanks for your info and time, greatly appreciated! based on your info, it seems that if i intended to make PI as a career than i do need the license. do u know what is the time frame before i could apply for the PA PI license? thanks!

i see that u are also live in PA, which agencies did ipiu referred u to? i'm sorry, have u gotten that far yet? most of the forums and threads that i read, all those people are on level three or beyond and i just want to be where they are at. i don't like to wait but i know i have to. u know, all these mailing back and forth is taking so much time that it is killing me!! my apology, i don't mean to vent my problems on u. what levels are u on now if u don't mind me asking?

    Lightbulb Licensing Requirements

Thanks for the links. I checked the SC ones and found plenty of information on the SC State Legislature site. Unfortunately the SC PI Association site is just one page with very little info. I hope the PIs in SC are more helpful than their website makes it appear. Even if they're not, I know where to go for any info I need. Right here at the IPIU forums!!!

Exclamation Licensing Requirements for South Carolina

The link for South Carolina legislature is correct. After you get to that page you have to go to the pull down at the top right of the page and get Code of Laws. Then you have to search for Private Investigator. The law is SECTION 40-18-70. Private Investigation License; applications; bond; renewal; display of license; qualifications of licensee; contract; reports to clients; arrest of licensee; inspections of business records; prior licensees. [SC ST SEC 40-18-70]

To my understanding an individual cannot be licensed until they have worked for a licensed agency for 3 years. Then they can obtain their own license and license a business of their own. If this is not correct, I hope someone will let me know.

I plan to open a Private Investigation agency here in Union as soon as I possibly can. We don't have any PI's here that I know of. We do have a couple of Process Servers.

They did offer the information that several certified training schools were in the developmental stages of preparing On-Line courses for consideration.

I know it doesn't help you immediately but at least some states are working on it. Maybe you could mention that?

    Darin,

Thanks for the all state's list. I live in Colorado where there is no lic. law however when all is said and done I plan to be an active part of the PI Association out here and I would still like to be licensed.

I know in Florida you have to have your "CC" Intern License for 2 years & have a sponsor to get to get this license before you can get your "C" Private Investigators license. My question is will the intern sponsorship for Florida to get the "CC" Intern License be covered in the materials that I will be receiving from IPIU?

Any other information that anyone might have on this would be helpful. I know all states have their own regulations and procedures for this.

    Thanks

If I have an employment agency license, can I also obtain a PI license?

No. If you have an employment agency license, or are a member of a partnership, or an officer or a holder of any stock in a corporation, or have any financial interest or participation in the control and management of any employment agency, you are NOT eligible to hold a PI WGP license.

Something from the state of New York.

I was wondering if any states had reciprocal licenses? I noted my state of Indiana does not require one, though I feel certain obtaining a license lends credibility as well as knowledge with regards to ones own states regulations etc.

    Hello Brandy,
There are a few states that do have reciprocal licences, most do not but you can contact the State ATTORNEY GENERAL's OFFICE in the state you need to go into and alot of states will ok you to work so many days in the state to get the information you need. As to your statementas to Indiana does not reqire one , are you saying you do not have to have a PI license in this State.

    Morning David,
Thank you for your reply re: Reciprocal licenses. Correct about the Indiana not needing one....well for the most part anyway. Depends on where your choices lie. I will seek one regardless.
May I ask where in In you are?
