You asked: "Does having a felony disqualify you for anything?"

Answer: To become a private investigator (not a police officer), felony convictions that are reasonably old (several years ago) do not disqualify you for working as a private investigator with 65% of the agencies. Felons can also own an agency with another licensed PI as the manager.

A poll conducted a few years ago showed that 25% of all private investigators (including licensed and unlicensed) had felony convictions. The most famous is G. Gordon Liddy, who was convicted during the presidential Watergate scandal in the Nixon days. After serving 4 years in a federal prison he went on to become a private investigator and established a PI School.
