So once I receive my state issued PI License, how do qualify for a concealed weapons permit? It is dangerous here in NY to operate in BEA work without a weapon.

David, can I still be able to obtain a sponsorship as an individual rather than a corporation? I mean, once I'm actually ready to start filing paperwork with NYS to apply for my PI state issued license, I want to apply as an individual. Is it a must that I do apply as a corporation opposed to operating as an individual?

The sponsorship benefit through IPIU requires a corporation, because your sponsor has to be listed on the corporate documents as a sponsor.

1) If you already have the 3-years experience (6000+ earned hours as an employed investigator) to qualify for an individual state PI license, then you can go ahead and apply now individually without incorporating yourself. But your personal name will be exposed and becomes a public record in New York as a licensed PI. Or, you can have IPIU incorporate you anonymously to protect your personal name and personal assets (in case their is a lawsuit later against you)

2) If you do NOT have the 3-years experience (6000+ earned hours as an employed investigator) to qualify for an individual state PI license, then you would have to locate a willing licensed PI or agency to provide you with full time employment for the next 3 years (or the next 6 years if part-time) in order to FIRST qualify for your personal individual PI license.

3) Remember, running any business as an individual and not a corporation has many risks and limitations involved. Setting up the proper corporation through IPIU will allow you to obtain an "agency license" which can employ as many licensed PI's with their names becoming part of a pubic record. Also, your corporation "lifetime membership" (through IPIU) provides for two ADDITIONAL FREE PERSONAL LIFETIME MEMBERSHIPS for either your family, partner, or colleague. Your company books will show you (in 3 years) have worked full time as a private investigator for a licensed agency. You can then proceed to qualify as your own sponsor at that time for your own agency.

As for you sponsor for the next three years, I suspect by then you will keep your sponsor on as a regular spare-time PI for his/her specialized skills, resources, and abilities. A 3-year relationship is worth keeping when it no longer requires you of anything.

Or are they Corporation business owners that are hiring us on into their agencies and training us for the next 3 years. Also, does working independently for MSP companies count toward our in field training of 3/yr requirement?

Answer:
Sponsors hold a PI License in the state where you want to obtain your own agency license. The primary reason they are a sponsor is less about training and more about lending their license to use in getting your own state agency license immediately. The secondary motive of some sponsors may be to help the new owner become trained in various aspects of the field and running a business. All sponsors have their own specialty, which is beneficial to the new agency owner.

Answer:
Yes. As the owner of the agency (you), sponsors can work your cases where you feel less qualified to perform. They work at a wholesale rate allowing themselves to work a portion of the case, and you as the owner of the agency earn the remainder of the client fee. So both of you earn money, and you can ride along or tag along because the case belongs to your agency.

Answer:
No. They are not hiring you. You are hiring them in a spare-time as-needed basis to work available cases only if you choose. The decision for paying a sponsor for anything rests with you, as the owner of the agency. The primary motive of the sponsor is not to train you, but provide you with the use of their personal license for the next 2-3 years in order for you, as a paid employee private investigator of your own agency, will have the 2-3 years documented experience to get transfer the agency license sponsor to your personal license. In most cases, when the three years comes about, the sponsor and the owner choose to keep the relationship.

does working independently for MSP companies count toward our in field training of 3/yr requirement?

Answer:
Yes and no. It depends on the finaly structure of your corporation license and business. As a sole propriator who does not have a corporation, the answer is typically "no". But as a corporation agency owner, many times the experience can count. But it would be best to explore this in your private agency forum link here:
