Thanks for this VALUABLE reference ! I knew it was illegal in California, and NOW I have the proof I need (and the legal citation to look this stuff up...)
(This will come in VERY handy in the future: I have reason to believe that my husband's EX-WIFE is taping phone conversations on her end!)
I can't wait to see her face fall the day she finds out I'm training as a P.I.

    SAY WHAT ? ! ? ! ?

I wasn't aware of the video taping the foyer if a door is open. Great info!! Thanks. You just never know what info you have that might help someone else. Great job!

    Recoridng from allowed states...

If you want to tape someone in a not allowed state, I believe, you can do so from one of the tapping allowed states.

Example: NH cannot record, but if I go to VT and then do the recording, you should be OK. It would be wise to rent a hotel room to have proff that you were in VT when the recordings were made...

Thanks for all the good information, would this also include phone conversation? From what I've heard, it doesn't. At lease one of the parties that you are talking with has to know that there is a recording being made!...Aj

This is all about Telephone or Audio recordings and not about video. There are no laws on undercover video at this time. That is why you have to be careful using both audio and video recording devices. Use of video only (without audio) is generally lawful everywhere.

If you come across any other internet links on the laws that may differ from what is posted here, please post them for review.

    Arthur,

The laws vary from state to state. Look at the summary of laws that are posted online. Then, when you think you need to record, check the current laws before you contact your attorney. I use a legal service where I pay a small monthly fee so I can ask questions like this without worrying about the money.

Since the law (as enacted) may not be current, you need to contact a lawyer.

    Rebecca,

You might consider keeping all the information digitally on your computer. You could convert your files to PDF and then drag them to a Kindle (an e-reader) so that you can have access to them more easily.

Michael , great idea . I was planning to save my info to discs as well . I've learned from experiences that technology is good but , computers ( even my new one can crash ...) so I like to have multiple back ups . Paper and computer. Will , take your advice though and follow through .

    Rebecca/Carl,

I backup my PhD program files every Sunday onto a dedicated thumb drive. I save my active files to Office Live Workspace (still free). I have 10GB of storage at several universities that I could us as backup.

The online storage would be safe for educational material. If I had to backup business documents, I would go with a thumb drive.
