Parents upset daughter questioned by Secret Service for Assassination Promotion???

    Give me a break!

What kind of culture do we now have to endure where parents let their teens promote the killing of the President of the United States! And what kind of parents would have an "issue" with their alleged contract killer to be questioned by the president's Secret Service?

Time for the president to give this whole family a one way ticket to any other country of their choosing.

As in Canada or the USA, love it or leave it.

Teen questioned for online Bush threats

Julia Wilson, 14, got a surprise visit from two Secret Service agents Wednesday at McClatchy High after the words "Kill Bush" appeared on MySpace.com. Her mom, Kirstie Wilson, says she should have been present when her daughter was questioned.

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Upset by the war in Iraq, Julia Wilson vented her frustrations with President Bush last spring on her Web page on MySpace.com.
She posted a picture of the president, scrawled "Kill Bush" across the top and drew a dagger stabbing his outstretched hand. She later replaced her page on the social-networking site after learning in her eighth-grade history class that such threats are a federal offense.

    It was too late.

Federal authorities had found the page and placed Wilson on their checklist. They finally reached her this week in her molecular biology class.

The 14-year-old freshman was taken out of class Wednesday and questioned for about 15 minutes by two Secret Service agents. The incident has upset her parents, who said the agents should have included them when they questioned their daughter.

On Friday, the teenager said the agents' questioning led her to tears.

"I wasn't dangerous. I mean, look at what's (stenciled) on my backpack — it's a heart. I'm a very peace-loving person," said Wilson, an honor student who describes herself as politically passionate. "I'm against the war in Iraq. I'm not going to kill the president."

Her mother, Kirstie Wilson, said two agents showed up at the family's home Wednesday afternoon, questioned her and promised to return once her daughter was home from school.

After they left, Kirstie Wilson sent a text message to her daughter's cellphone, telling her to come straight home: "There are two men from the secret service that want to talk with you. Apparently you made some death threats against president bush."

"Are you serious!?!? omg. Am I in a lot of trouble?" her daughter responded.

Moments later, Kirstie Wilson received another text message from her daughter saying agents had pulled her out of class.

Julia Wilson said the agents threatened her by saying she could be sent to juvenile hall for making the threat.

"They yelled at me a lot," she said. "They were unnecessarily mean."

Spokesmen for the Secret Service in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., said they could not comment on the case.

Wilson and her parents said the agents were justified in questioning her over her MySpace.com posting. But they said they believe agents went too far by not waiting until she was out of school.

They also said the agents should have more quickly figured out they weren't dealing with a real danger. Ultimately, the agents told the teen they would delete her investigation file.

Assistant Principal Paul Belluomini said the agents gave him the impression the girl's mother knew they were planning to question her daughter at school. There is no legal requirement that parents be notified.

"This has been an ongoing problem," said Ann Brick, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union in San Francisco.

Former Govs. Pete Wilson and Gray Davis vetoed bills that would have required that parents give consent or be present when their children are questioned at school by law enforcement officers. A similar bill this year cleared the state Senate but died in the Assembly.

Julia Wilson plans to post a new MySpace.com page, this one devoted to organizing other students to protest the Iraq war.

"I decided today I think I will because it (the questioning) went too far," she said.

    Exclamation My opinion

    My opinion on this?

1st.... What is a 14 year old doing with a webpage?

2...... If she has a webpage... why is not being monitored by her parents?

3... The parents should be questioned.... as well.... (maybe more so) because you can bet, this 14 year old did not come up with her resentment against the war and/ or president... on her own.

You can bank on that! "DJ"

I agree with DJ. First and formost, if my daughter isn't atleast old enough to work, I will monitor their computer activity. I mean, there is alot of stuff that happens these days involving the internet.

I also believe, her mother knew that she had this on her myspace page. I mean, girls normally do get along with their mothers more than fathers. Therefore, I'm sure her mother was atleast aware of her having an account on myspace.

Investigate what your children are doing, for their saftey!!

D.J good questions, the subject comes from up-bringing,14 year olds for the most part have little interest in politics,i think as well the parents should be the ones questioned.

    Re:

In the day of this society... Parents need to take extra measures to insure values, morals, in the upbringing of our children.

Steven is correct in his assumption that most 14 year old girls.... would have no interest in this issue....

So again, I would have to ask, where did this 14 year old learn to hate/ resent the war/ and/or the President of the United States.

Julia Wilson plans to post a new MySpace.com page, this one devoted to organizing other students to protest the Iraq war.
No 14 year old "child" should be involved with this... These children are not old enough to protest/vote or even drive a car!

If the above quote... is correct... then in my opinion, the parents are promoting this type of behavior. They should be questioned.... extensively!!!!!!!!!!!

    Just an opinion. "DJ"

Well, I only know what has been posted here about the case. Based on that information I agree with what has been said. What I do not see is any outrage against what was posted by the minor by the parents. I get the impression that they must agree to some extent to what was posted.

With teenagers of my own, politics are the furtherest thing from their minds. Other than what they get from teachers at school (that I have heard them echo) they have no real feel for politics. When they do make statements pro or con about politics I challenge them as to why they feel that way. Most times it is because someone else told them just enough to lead them to think like they wanted them to.

So if the parents are not the source maybe it comes from a teacher. If it was a teacher then the parents would have shown more rage at the minor, in my thinking.

I agree with all of these posts.. Regardless of any given person's political viewpoint, making statements/threats such as this are not only disrespectful (and criminal,) but they weaken the morale of the men and women which so bravely and unselfishly put their (rear ends) on the line and put their lives before that of the fellow American.

I myself have reservations about certain aspects of the war in Iraq, but to me, this is a load of garbage. I read the initial run of this story and (like others) I immediately thought to myself- "It's the parents they need to be questioning!"

They ought to stick that child with a bazillion hours of community service, picking trash up off the freeway, and while they're at it, mandatory parenting classes for mom and dad. One wonders if that would even help..

    PERSONAL OPINION Only:

THIS IS A 14 YEAR OLD??????????

I might be dating myself, but that does not look like the typical 14 year old I saw back in my school days. If the girl were to wear that kind of makeup, that kind of jewelry, that kind of low-cut blouse, and that kind of knee knics, she would have been SUSPENDED from school and sent home with a "reputation".

But then again, that was back in the early 60's. And in those days politics was running for class president, not petitioning the build up in Vietnam on High School Campus' (which cam much later)

This girl has been hanging out for sometime with someone, that's for sure. If not the parents and teachers, then some kind of crowd - more likely an internet crowd.

If the parents get hauled in by Homeland Security, I say - GO AHEAD.

  9. #9
First of all, I believe that a 14 year old is as dangerous (if not more) than an adult. What makes them more dangerous is the fact that everybody thinks they are not. This subject should not be taken likely. I am glad the secret service agents made her cry. She needs a wake up call. I do believe the parents of the Culombine students would agree with me.

I agree that mom and dad play (or should anyway) a big role in the monitoring of their child's web activities.

What bothers me is the way the child got pulled out of the class by secret service the way she did. I think actions like that (almost without thinking) gives everyone else in a position like that a bad name.

And, I wonder why they wouldn't comment on the completion of that?

    Just my 2 cents...

Re: Parents upset daughter questioned by Secret Service for Assassination Promotion??

MySpace is a haven for child pornographers, molesters, deviates and everything else that drags along the bottom of the Internet. At least 3 out of the 10 cases I see involve MySpace in some form. Most parents, I believe, are not aware of how easy it is for a child to create a MySpace page without knowing any HTML programming, or anything but simply filling out question boxes and hitting "Submit".

Parents can monitor Internet usage, however their powers can only reach so far. Kids can simply go down to the local library or Internet Cafe and have an online presence in just a few minutes. So in agreement with the fact that parents NEED to monitor their kids, other places that offer free Internet (including MySpace) should have things in place to monitor this type of activity and have more controls in place to prevent them.

I disagree with how Secret Service dealt with the teen. She was exercising her First Amendment Right. IMO, she should have expressed her opinion in a more tactful way though. Granted, her parents should have been monitoring her web access as well as her myspace page*, but I believe she was acting emotionally. If she had known that posting the picture would have been a federal offence, she wouldn’t have posted it. She DID take it down when she found out it was one.

Also, it is very possible for a 14 year old to form an opinion on politics on their own. I know when I was in high school and the War in Iraq was just beginning, my History and Debate teachers challenged us to form our own objective opinions about the war; to think, to read, to be informed about the world we were about to enter. Not all teens are oblivious to the world around them.

*Not that I agree that she should have a myspace page at that age. Myspace should be an 18 and older site with age verification of some sort, in my opinion.

Uh threats against the President are NOT a 1st ammendment right. Secondly ignorance of the law is no excuse; that would be a dangerous precident to set wouldn't it?

I'm in agreement with the majority here. It's obvoius that someone (the parents) have been feeding her this anti-war drivel. I don't think any reasonable person thinks killing the President is a solution, or even funny. If minors need to be looked at by law enforcement, they must be able to do their jobs, and not have to play some game about having parents there. Heck, parents do not have to be told if their child is pregnant and getting an abortion, but yet we're angry not to know if LEO is asking a few questions?

    Re: My opinion

I think she may have learned a good lesson. Very dumb statement...no matter what her personal beliefs are. In a public forum like myspace.com...of course it will be monitored. I say..."good job" to the secret service". We're living in dangerous times. Most teens don't have a clue to what's going on. They also have no respect. How could they when they're probably mimicking their parents??

Re: Parents upset daughter questioned by Secret Service for Assassination Promotion???

I completely agree with you Joan. GOOD JOB to the secret service. Alot of people believe that children should not be held accountable for their actions. If this so called "child" can make a myspace page and put what she did on it, then she can handle a little embarrasment at school. If it was a 40 year old male at work who did this, and the secret service responded to his job in that fasion, then everyone would be saying, "What a great response they had." Despite the age, sex, nationality, or whatever, I believe they did a bang up job with how they handled the situation.

Some people are so against the War that I have heard remarks like...

Why are we distroying these people lives with war and destruction. They might retaliate with a dirty bomb or something against the United States.

"Huh! instead of taking revenge against all of Us they should get that 1 person who supports the war."

Cynthia this is someones personal opinion.

Re: Parents upset daughter questioned by Secret Service for Assassination Promotion???

I have 2 teaching certifications, with one being in Social Studies. For 3 years I taught history, geography, economics and goverment to high school students. In that whole time with approximately 500 students, there may of been 3 or 4 that truly had a political opinion that they formed on their own. The rest just reiterated what their parents or other family members believed.

As a teacher, I'd always tell my students that they HAD TO back up what they said with a good argument that included facts. When it came time to back of their opinion about goverment and war, they would end up saying, "My mom and dad said__________(Fill in the blank.)

Ask any teenager how often they watch the news voluntarily or read a news magazine. You'll find that most don't. This girls parents most definetely formed her opinions. The Secret Service was completely right to check her out quickly. We need to stop letting teens off the hook for the things they do. I got out of teaching because after 3 years I saw that the kids are in control of the schools and consequences for actions changed on a daily basis so as not to offend kids or their parents.

Kids these days...even at 22 I can say that. I never, at 14, acted like I had a political opinion that was remotely based in fact. I didn't even know how to drive a car at that age; why would I think I knew what was best for the rest of the country?

The dumb girl hopefully learned her lesson fast, as well as the rest of that school when they saw two uniformed SS agents on their property. She's smart enough to take molecular biology as a freshman, but not smart enough to realize "Kill Bush" might set off a few red flags? Yeesh...

Re: Parents upset daughter questioned by Secret Service for Assassination Promotion??

I think the Secret Service did the right thing by immediately going to the school and questioning this young lady
They also said the agents should have more quickly figured out they weren't dealing with a real danger.
WHAT!! Are these people not in touch with reality. What about all the school shootings that have taken place over the last few years, as I recall the shooters were not adults. When investigations were conducted as to why the shooters did what they did, things very similar to this (her posting in my space) were found in the belongings of the suspects.

In closing I'd like to say that right now as I'm typing this, over in Tulsa there is a 14-year old sitting in the county jail about to go on trial for First degree murder as an adult.

The only thing that shocked me was that it didn't happen in San Francisco. Good for the Secret Service. I hope it taught that youngster a good lesson, one that should have been taught by her parents. I am sorry but the whole myspace things is just to adult for teenagers. But long ago were the days when a kid would go out and play kid games instead of these adult ones. I wonder what the world will look like in 30 years or so.....

Re: Parents upset daughter questioned by Secret Service for Assassination Promotion???

15 minutes of questioning was going too far? This child and her mother (I noticed there was no mention of the father) did not learn a lesson. The questioning obviously led to this girl becoming more involved in protesting the war, which in and of itself is not a bad thing, but she is protesting (through her new web page) the war NOW because she felt she was treated oh so badly for being questioned about threatening the life of the President. One doesn't have to do with the other. What may have been simple trash talk by a teenager may have been obvious to those who knew who best, but all threats have to be treated equally. 15 minutes by the Secret Service means they checked it out and almost immediately realized what they were dealing with. It shold have ended there, but instead it became news and we're still voicing our opinions about it 2 years later! (on that note, I'm going to bed!)

Re: Parents upset daughter questioned by Secret Service for Assassination Promotion??

I feel the child has a right to get herself involved mentally in the issues of her country but not as far as being a protester in something that she has no "true" concept about, and as far as making her cry, in my opinion that is very minor to what she deserved to go through by threatening the life of someone especially it being the president. She simply had a wake up call from being a naive child to being treated like an adult in a very adult and in my opinion anti American situation, so I say good job to the service. And if the parents are allowing her to continue her outburst because she was disciplined by authority then I question this child's future and the parenting skills from mom and dad. I know it's an old topic but I found this very interesting and somewhat shocking.

I do agree with some of you, weir is the parents and why in the world that this 14year old have her own web page with no adult supervision! But I do have to say in these times we live in, these teenagers have a mind of there own; do any of you remember when you were a teenager and how rebellious we all can be. And then the friends you hang out with as a teenager some bad some good. I guess working with children all different age group for 4years. I have come to realized that you can be the the best parent very well known in the communty and still have a kid that has gone down hill. For example look at the collbin shooting those boys grew up in a two parent home and in a upscale commuty. My point is that they had no family problem they were'nt abused they choice to do what they did. Sorry to get of the topic! but this young lady more than likely have friends that don't like bush or even heard parents talking. she has her own opinion just stating it. So hopfully this experience will teach her to keep her violent opinion to herself or even watch what she say in public.

I have to agree with some that the parents should have been monitoring this 14 yr old on the net. MySpace is a dangerouse place for anyone IMO. But a 14 yr old does not need to be on it at all. Thank you all.

I will second Edward's question. Why do you think it is dangerous?

Myspace IS dangerous, for one thing, you never truely know who is beind the page. There are literally, terrorists, rapists, child moletsers, just to name a few that haunt Myspace, as well as other social networking sites.

There was a VERY famous case, not that long ago, where a case of cyber bullying ended in a teen girl commiting suicide over comments posted to her Myspace page... what makes it even more sad, is that it wasn't some kid posting the replies, it was a jealous MOTHER of another teen that posted the comments.

Myspace IS closely watched by law enforcement, and anything they find on there HAS to be taken seriously. I believe there was an incident on there recently that allowed police to thwart a school shooting, as well as several bomb threats (I dunno offhand if they were founded or not).

I am sure that the original story when it was posted here with the "K B" quote earned us a visit from the SS or the FBI, people need to remember, the internet is NOT private, no matter what you think. Forum postings, Instant Messages, website posting, Email is ALL easily intercepted and read. Whether you think I am paranoid or not, I KNOW that the NSA frequently reads comments posted or IM'ed or Emailed that have any number of trigger words and phrases. Right now if I say "Come to the City, it's da bomb" Somewhere in Virginia, a red light is flashing anda federal agent will likely be by to read this comment.

Is this a bad thing? You will probably hear a lot of people say yes, I bet there are some on here that feel it is an invasion of their privacy. Me, I don't think it's a bad thing, I think it's more than fair to have the FBI read my postings if the trade off is, they might read something somewhere else, ad thwart a bombing or an assassination or something equally as terrible.

Re: Parents upset daughter questioned by Secret Service for Assassination Promotion???

First of all, the girl got off easy. She was questioned for 15 whole minutes....whoa. If I had been questioning her, she would have done more than cry, she become a nun. That girl would have never said a hurtful thing about anyone ever again and would never think of touching a computer.

My question is, who cares what a 14 year old girl who sits and watches Spongebob, plays with Barbies and is reading an article in Teen Beat about how cute the vampire guy from Twilight is, thinks about the war in Iraq. Like she could even find the place on a map that had the country names printed on it. As a US Marine, I laugh when people like this give me their opinions about what I have done or what I do.

My kids do not get on the internet on their own, they do not have a myspace page that they run, they do not send emails on their own and they do not associate with anyone they do not know in person first when they do get on. The computer that they use is not wired into the internet and does not have wireless capability. Its a work and game machine.

Another issue is that kids do not have the fundamental rights that adults have. If they did , then they could smoke and drink legally at all ages. They could be able to drive and own guns. Schools would have no authority over children and would be unable to tell children talking during a class to be quiet. They would not be able to discipline children. Detention would be considered holding them against their will. Children do not have the fundamental rights we have, so the girls comments about killing bush could never be considered a protected first amendment right (even if it wasn't a violent threat).

Lastly, its time parents were held accountable for their childrens actions. If a child commits a murder, the parents are held responsible too. Just like owners of pitbulls are held responsible when their dogs attack people, so should parents of violent kids. They learned that violence, not from music, tv or video games, but from their friends, families and neighbors. I do not care if a kid plays Grand Theft Auto and kills people by the hundreds, a parent should be the one who tells them a game is fantasy and not real life. That killing people is wrong. I think people need to stop blaming things on ADHD or Bi-polar. There are thousands if not millions of people who live with those issues who never commit a crime. Parents need to be held accountable (and the government should be lenient on spankings).

Re: Parents upset daughter questioned by Secret Service for Assassination Promotion???

I know this is a very, very old post, but I actually wanted to get my say in about this and along those same lines the Internet in general.

Kids pick up on things from adults, other kids, teachers, etc, but I feel that the parents are mostly to blame, first of all for not monitoring their daughters activities online and second of all, they were not, according to the report posted, the least bit concerned with their daughters actions. It was as if they approved.

The Internet is one of the most useful commodities that has come along, in my lifetime at least, and it can be one of the safestest ways to correspond with loves ones far away, send data, keep up with news, interact with others and more, when used in the manner in which it was invented but when in the wrong hands it can become extremely dangerous.

Parents need to know what type of things their kids are getting into when on the internet and they should teach them etiquette when posting in the chat rooms, on networking sites etc, letting them know that they can get into a lot of trouble should they continue to make threats, even if it is perhaps idle threats. These are serious and can and most likely will be taken very seriously by the authorities at all times. On a site such as Myspace.com, the moderators should have been doing a better job of controlling the content and put a stop to this before it had a chance to get as far as it did.
