    Reciprocity Laws & Interstate Investigations

I was curious about the answer to this question has anyone come up with the answer, since I live close to the border of Ohio and Ky and both states have very different laws concearning license requirements.

Can a person living in one state have licensing in another also as long as they meet the state licensing requirements?

    Any help?

    SECTION 1:
    :
    NOTE:
    1. Regulated Cases require a state issued PI License
Example of a regulated case is:
      • Surveillance where the PI is recording the actions of a target for a report that will be used or presented in a court case.
    2. Unregulated Cases do not require any state PI License (Therefore, you do not need to consider reciprocity)
Example of an unregulated case is:
      • Locating a person, such as using public records, court files, internet sources, etc.

For a complete list of unregulated cases (exemptions) located in your state topic: Click here

List of States with NO STATE PI LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
    1. Alaska
    2. South Dakota
    3. Wyoming
    4. Mississippi
    5. Alabama
    6. Idaho

    ______________________

    SECTION 2:

    Reciprocity Statutes

Some states now have Reciprocity Statutes allowing another state licensed PI to conduct an investigation in their state. Limited Reciprocity may mean they can complete an investigation in another state for 30 days. Full Reciprocity may mean they can complete an investigation with no time limit.

Example: For Louisiana, the following statement is on their web site:
"This means that a Louisiana licensed private investigator can now follow cases that originated in Louisiana to 16 states and can easily be licensed in two other states."

Consult each state licensing topic in this forum and go directly to the statutes to look for reciprocity:
