Mosquitoes hate cell phones too
Korean mobile phone maker says new ringtone may repel pests.
July 10, 2003: 1:06 PM EDT
SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's top mobile phone operator is offering a new service that allows cellphone users to download a sound it says repels troublesome mosquitoes.
The sound should be capable of clearing the insects within a range of one meter, said SK Telecom Co, which claimed it had worked during tests.
Mosquitoes are a common irritant during the hot, humid summers in Korea.
Subscribers will be able to download the sound, which will cost $2.54, via the firm's wireless Internet service from Monday. The sound plays constantly and is faintly audible to the human ear.
Repelling the bugs will use up to 30 percent more of the phone's battery power, said SK, which controls more than half of Asia's third-largest mobile market.

Hi Michele,
I'm sure it must smell better than bug repellant too.

Hi Leisl,
We can only imagine... at least they're thinking of convenience, lol

That would be awsome around here in Mi. I lived in Fl. for about eight years, but the blood suckers there have nothing over the ones here.

Last time I was in MI, browsing the gift shops, and many many other shops and places in the huge awesome Mall of America, I saw many of those bumper stickers with the mosquito on it that says "send more tourists". Too funny! Land of 10,000 lakes... million mosquitoes?

Hey,
You know if they would just invent something like a beeper strapped to their waist, instead of using their cell phones, maybe they could use their phones for another reason, like talking to someone. :D
Just a thought..., :)
And also, I agree with Byron & Kathleen, about the mosquitos being so blood thirsty. It seems that the tourist ended up in my neck of woods (Montreal) instead, of Michigan.
Thanks Michigan,

One blood sucker is the same as the next, what ever they can think of to keep them from getting to anyone and stirring up anymore viruses, more power to them.

With the recent outbreak of the potentially fatal West Nile virus, hopefully even more preventative measures will be developed and become available, as well as a means to control the overly populated mosquito population to begin with.
They seem to be a huge problem everywhere, except in the Pacific Northwest.. when I lived there, I noticed Oregon and Washington seem to be virtually insect and humidity free, nice environment, no screen house required (just a big umbrella. ;) :)

Kathleen, a nice thought, maybe they could fix the sound in a wrist band of some kind.
Washington, and Oregan sound like nice places to live. :D
Have a wonderful week. Take care. :)

Hi B Ann,
A wrist band would be a great idea. It probably won't be long before engineers develop cell phones you can wear on your wrist. That would be a lot more convenient than carrying one, especially if it could be combined with a watch, blood pressure monitor, gps, etc. That would be cool. Technology keeps getting smaller, more convenient and consumer friendly. Usually quite expensive when initially introduced to the market, but prices come down as competition increases and component prices decrease.
Oregon and Washington were beautiful, rainy but gorgeous.
Some of the most beautiful scenery in the US is there, coast, lakes, mountains, gorge, waterfalls, high desert, volcanoes, dunes, sea lions, seals, sand dunes, just incredible. Living there was like taking a long paid vacation:) But NH is home, so here I am :)

Here's another interesting mosquito repelling gadget I found.. see the link below, seems it emits signals to keep the little pests at bay. Thought it would be fun to post.

Kathie,
If you cannot kill them, why bother?
If they have a JUMBO size, the New Jersey crowd might be interested. :o

Maybe they can add a feature that attracts them and then zaps em, hehe:)

Kathie,
That might work. :D
It is interesting that people really do want to see the dead bug bodies. It has to do with retribution. RAID will tell you that the study was valid and that they market to the needs and expectations of the customers. :D

They could use that in North Carolina too.

Hi Michael,
That explains why the Raid commercials, where the little bugs drop dead were so popular:D

Hi Jeff,
Yeah, the little buggers are just about everywhere, seems they know no geographical boundaries:( Wish they would stay in one spot, so we could extinguish them all;)

Kathie,
I remember that issue in a show on the Discovery Channel. I almost forgot about it until I started reading criminal justice text books and studied the concept of 'retribuition'. The two fit together so nicely.

I think their marketing should be something like this:
"Can you hear me now?...Good!....ZAP!!!"

Hi Brian,
Long time no speak. All is well, for the most part, been pretty busy, work, divorce, parents are aging rapidly, etc. It's great to hear from you. Talk to you on the boards again soon. I hope you had a great holiday ! Did you advance to level 4 recently?

Hi Karen,
I was just thinking... Nashua is not in the Londonderry/Manchester area phonebook.
But I'm listed on whitepages.com, so check that out and give me a ring sometime. Coffee would be great, especially in the winter, lol
Looking forward to meeting you soon.:)

Looks like we have a problem, or may I say looks like we may have to solve a problem. Okay everybody lets get in gear. Phones to the ears, heads cocked to the side and eyes wide open. Make sure you keep your mouth close and don't forget to wear long sleeve shirts.
What are we going to have to deal with next. We got the Mad Cow and the Bitting Bug, are we ready for the talking Jackass?
Oh, that one has already been here. Things get interesting everyday which makes things exciting. What would we do if everything was okay?
Where do we go from here? This is a case for THE INVESTIGATOR. Lets start with this BUG! Anybody got any solution to repel this Korean Bug? The phone repelent sounds a little extreme.
The gift of the Bug, what more can a fella ask for! I guess Tis The Season.
