IPIU will be sponsoring worldwide local clubs for members to meet weekly under the Toastmasters International Club Organization, which will prepare members to obtain cases and clients locally.
Toastmaster Graduates and Dale Carnegie Graduates will be invited to apply for special participation at IPIU's International Convention in Hollywood, California in 2004.
If you have no experience at this point, then by Spring of 2004 you may very well have it! :)
<hr>
Have you ever participated in Toastmaster Club or Gavel Club for leadership preparation? Or the Dale Carnegie Course?
If so, please POST a REPLY to this topic so that we may better understand the needs and skills of our members.

I've never been in either organization, but I am a bit of an extrovert. If you think I can help in some way, just let me know.
These local meetings sound interesting.
Oh, I am waiting for my badge, too. And, I expect it any day now, too. I am also hoping for another case to come my way. Now, that I can take them, they are scarce! I had a couple offers when I was not able to take them.

I received your message in regards to Toastmasters and Dale Carnegie graduates. I am proud to say that I am a Toastmaster graduate. It only took $3 in nickels to get over saying UMMMM.
I really enjoyed Toastmasters Club and I can say that it really helped me get rid of the fear of public speaking, (and no I don't imagine everyone sitting in their underwear while I am speaking).
If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

I agree with everyone that this is indeed exciting news. I feel somewhat ignorant though in having extensive experience but never attended either of these. In fact I don't know much about either.

Dear Mary, thank you for your e-mail. Well, I am neither of two, but the country I am coming from it is a former communist country. In such an environment if you do not know to manage things, you are dead meat for vultures. You do not need courses, but to keep thinking all the time (i.e.: who's the next to hit you and where, if possible). It is a hell of a chess, which also teaches you to talk to everybody accordingly. It is all about learning to survive, and that's a tough story. I would love to participate being always ready to learn things and exchange opinions. If I could be of any help for my area, please let me know. I could even have ideas that might help.

I have read Dale Carnegie, never participated in an actual class. It was incorporated as part of my education at an upscale salon i worked at in New York ( Concept Elite) It is a necessary componant to be able to show confidence and eloquence when speaking to your clients.
Besides mastering the " Art " of communication, i have also done some speaking, narrating, poetry reading, acting, and preforming in a rock band.
Still, even when i'm doing hair, i'm still putting on a " show "!,,,it's mostly comedy though!!!!! Laughter IS the best medicine.:D

There will be other topics of discussion on what Toastmasters is, and how any student of the Dale Carnegie course can benefit from an IPIU sponsored Private Investigators Toastmaster Club in your area. In fact, both Toastmasters and Dale Carnegie got their start in the early 1930's while the country (and the world) was suffering from an economic depression. But don't get me started in this topic.
This topic is designed to see which "forum members" have had any previous experience with leadership and speaking skills. For those who post here that you have no experience, please continue posting! The more interest the better.
For those who have some experience, I suspect IPIU will contact you directly to aide in helping the provisional local club in any manner you can, and to share your experience with newcomers.
In all, IPIU is proposing to use the Toastmaster Club mechanism to accomplish a tremendous local benefit for private investigators, and to prepare them for the International Convention in 2004.
All the best,

I have heard of both "Toastmaster" and "Dale Carnegie" and think it is a good idea. I moved from Alabama to Tennessee and I don't know anyone here so I think by forming this club, it will give all the ipiu family members here in the local area a chance to get together and learn. If there is anything I can do to help please let me know. I have not received my training manual yet, but hope to have it any day now.
I am looking forward to meeting all of my tennessee family.

If you're interested in each of these training systems, do a search on the Internet and you will find the needed information you're seeking regarding their training courses.
In fact, Toastmasters' website has a page that will direct you to a non-IPIU club in your area.

I was very involved with Toastmasters a few years ago. I competed in the Table Topics and Evaluations contests and won several awards. I was club president and Area Governor and I helped form a club in a medium security men's prison which was well attended! There hasn't been a club that fit my schedule lately or I would be involved now. It is a great self development and very fun organization to be a member of.

Dear Mary,
What an excellent idea. I am a graduate of Dale Carnegie (Effective Speaking and Human Relations Course). I am not familiar with the Toastmasters International Club Organization, but will do my homework. Looking back on my experiences and how they would be relevant to the ongoing needs and skills of our PI's -- a mix of Dale Carnegie and Outward Bound would be outstanding.
I am really looking forward to the 2004 Convention. IPIU only gets better and better.
Sincerely,:)

I am not a Toastmasters member nor a Dale Carnegie grad, but I have prepared and presented several full-day paralegal seminars on litigation-related topics. In addition, I have had lots of public speaking experience as the past president of the Kansas City Paralegal Association (300+ members) at various meetings and conventions. I also have significant performing experience - vocals/guitar in rock bands, choral groups, comedy skits, etc. I used to be a sound engineer which comes in handy when dealing with audio/visual equipment during presentations.
My parents were Dale Carnegie grads, so I am familiar with the program.
Let me know if I can be of assistance.

But I am asking myself if such a club could be set up for the "Garden State" only, or if it is set up in New York, can I.P.I.U members of "Garden State" join it?

I took Dale Carnegie's course on "Public Speaking & Human Relations" early on in my corporate career, and it helped make speaking in front of an audience a lot less intimidating. It was also great training for compressing lengthy stories/topics into short and concise presentations. We were required to give at least two presentations of 2-4 minutes at each session!
After graduation, I was asked to serve as a volunteer Graduate Assistant. This was not only flattering, but it also gave me the opportunity to help new students and forget about myself.
I highly recommend public speaking courses to everyone.
It's not that you never get butterflies... you simply learn to put the butterflies in formation!
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance in Los Angeles.

I think I may have addressed the issue of attending these courses in an earlier thread but, I am not sure so, I will attempt to do so once more.
For those of you interested in either of these two courses you may want to do an Internet search. This search will lead you to their specific website.
The one I truely looked into was the Dale Carnigie course(s). They are not cheap; roughly $1,500 per course depending on which course you take, and its duration.
For those of you who are business owners within the PI arena, I suggest you take the presentation course too. Remember, when appealing to banks or your potential corporate/law firm clients, you will most probably be giving them a power point presentation on your services. If you did not plan on doing that then you should. Therefore, you might as well do it right and be impressive by learning how to do it right.
Hope this helps.

I am not a graduate of either, but I would love to be a part of helping to organize a local group. I had thought of getting together a local group myself to support each other in our PI careers.
I have read several Carnegie books also, as well as some others on speaking, and have done public seminars and presentations. I have owned my own business, and been a substitute teacher at a private school.
Please feel free to contact me for any possible help you may need, no matter how small, in starting this new endeavor.

I have not participated in either, I have often thought of participating in toastmasters. I am a family therapist and Addictions counselor and have been lecturing for 17 years. I still have a lot to learn though and I still get those butterflies before I give a lecture or teach a class after all these years. I would love to particpate in anything that can improve my skills giving presentations, I believe there is always something new to learn!
I would enjoy very much to help facilitate or organize a group in my area, feel free to contact me anytime.

I have Knowledge about the toast master organization, even I
did not get a chance to participate with them yet . But also allowed me to bring to your attention, that many years ago I
founded an organization here in Florida. In which the event I
organized as president of the organization were very succesful.
I manage to make my first meeting in the Juan Pablo Duarte
Park in Miami. And end up having a group of working people
that help me to organize social event. Most of the cultural
events that I organize, motivate the community so much that thousands of people respond and pay their way in to see
our presentation. I strongly believe to have communication skills.
I also have taken a few courses years ago in New York City
in human behavior. In the year 1980 I was elected in the Bronx
Community College, as a student club president.
Sincerely, Temistocles Tatis.

I would like more information as to what is a toastmaster. Is it like making a toast at a table? If so this may cross the line on religion. Please someone explain to me what this is because I am interested in networking with others.
Thanks

Michelle,
Check out their website, toastmasters. org. I think you'll find enough information to answer your questions. :)

Greetings to All!
This may be WELL after the fact but thought I'd respond to the adminstrator post for current, graduate or former Toastmaster participants. I was a regular Toastmaster participant rising to President of our employee division. I'd be interested in learning more about IPIU's involvement and/or support.

Hello, I am not a graduate of either of these, but from the way it looks in the forum it sounds like a real good idea. I would really like to know how to get involved and become a member if I could. Can anyone help me get the information I need to become a member?

Hello Robert,
I am by no means an authority on Toastmasters International (TM) or Dale Carnegie. As a former member of TM, I do have a binder filled with information somewhere. However, I can tell you that the program is a public speaking and leadership development program operating at the regional, state and national levels. Many employers act as sponsors for the program by supplying free meeting space and encouraging employee participation. Each group is chartered and is assigned to an area and regional president. Each charter elects their own officers; i.e.; President, Treasurer, Secretary, etc who perform specific duties outlined in the by-laws. The meetings are held as frequently as desired by the charter and each meeting lasts between 1-2 hours (mostly over the lunch hour). Charter members are scheduled to give prepared speeches that are timed and critiqued by their peers. Comments are made regarding diction, articulation, presence, eye contact, etc.
Novice TMs advance from one level to another after presenting so many speeches. This is strictly legit and confirmed by pins and TM titles. The information is reported to the Regional Toastmasters division and remains a part of your record throughout the TM organization. TM has numerous events outside the workplace and also compete against one another at the regional, state and national levels. I was a participant for several years and truly enjoyed the program. It's also good to discover and address some of those "speaking deficiencies" and mannerisms we're totally unaware of. Certain things like "um" and other "dead space" counts against your final score for each speech. You need to score so high on each speech or repeat the presentation in order to receive credit. Amongst other things, you learn how to capture and maintain the attention of your audience and effectively use visual aids to enhance your presentation. A few speeches and you'll know whether or not you can take constructive criticism. It helped thicken my skin, I'll tell you that.
Since IPIU is involved, I would think that they have the information on the sign-up process. Otherwise, you can try www.toastmasters.com on the web. That will give you all the different TM areas. Or, try www.toastmasters.org which is the website for Toastmasters International.
I hope this answered some of your questions.

May,
Thank you, it did answer my questions and I have put the websites on my internet server providers main page so that I can access them. This is actually more information than I thought I would receive. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hi, Sandy!
Thank you for the links. An acquaintance of mine once attended a Dale Carnagie seminar and got a lot out of it. This may seem like a stupid question, but does TM help shy people like me?
I've given lots of presentations and speeches over the years, but not without considerable butterflies and rapid speech. :)

Hello Deborah,
The answer to your question is "ABSOLUTELY". The members of your charter group are there to support, encourage and help you not embarrass or belittle you. The culture is similar to the IPIU forums. The charters are melting pots of various personalities, backgrounds and interests. The members are also at various levels in the TM organization. But all of them began at the same point so they readily identify with the common fears associated with public speaking.
The charter members work together to achieve their individual goals. It's not a place to hide because participation is closely monitored. Anyone who doesn't volunteer to speak is soon drafted. The criticism is always constructive and respectful.
I understand how you feel about being shy and we've all felt the butterflies when all eyes are upon us. But with the help of TM and lots of practice in the workplace, I really overcame this. I'm still somewhat shy but I've learned to deal with it a lot better. After a massive layoff, I lost track of my charter members and I never found a charter that worked with my schedule. I'd welcome the opportunity to get involved again. It was time well spent! If you decide to give TM a try, I'm sure you'll LOVE IT and it's also a lot easier on your pocketbook than some other things out there! Best wishes for your continued success! GO FOR IT!

IPIU will be sponsoring worldwide local clubs for members to meet weekly under the Toastmasters International Club Organization, which will prepare members to obtain cases and clients locally.
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to check and see if there had been any updates on when these meeting will be starting and where. I would love to be involved with this.
Though I have never participated in either Toastmasters or Dale Carnegie, my aunt is an active member with Toastmasters in Oklahoma and she loves it.

I checked the Toastmaster Website. There are no meetings convenient to me, so I ordered a start pack for a new club. I have attended meetings in the past.

Some of these posts are quite old, at least a year in some cases. So I am not sure whether this topic has been dropped or not. However, I have been involved in several Toastmasters clubs, and would be very interested in further developments.
Thank you.

I, too, am not a Toastmaster's or Dale Carnegie grad, yet have been a public speaker for many years. Is the project IPIU has been working on restricted for TM & DC grads? I would be most interested in finding out more about participation.
If anyone monitoring this forum can advise me I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!:)

Yes, I have completed the Dale Carnegie class, HOW TO WIN. This class was paid for my by employer, after being on the job about 6 months. I got the name of PERKY during this class. I throughly enjoyed this class. I think the most rewarding for me was learning names, and the name association process learned.
I did participate in TOASTMASTERS for a while. I think I held the distinguished honor of having the most AHHS in any speach. I am now more aware of saying "AH".
I hope this helps.

Hello Everyone,
I'm trying to see if we have heard any updates on possibly getting something like this started in the Arizona area. Currently, there are between 4 and 6 IPIU members in this area that I have been corresponding back and forth with through the forums and we would all like to meet and get to know eachother on a more personal basis. If anyone could assist us in doing this we would be most grateful!
Take Care,

I attended toastmaster meetings in the past and I graduated Dale Carnigie's Public Speaking and Human Relations Course training at their offices off of N. Druid Hills Road in Atlanta, GA.
I also have the original 1st edition of Mr. Carnigie's book "How to Win Friends And Influence People" I got from my grandfather.
I would like to participate in a Toastmasters IPIU meeting in the Atlanta area.

T.H.E.O.S. in America stands for To Help Each Other Succeed, in America.
Theo is the greek root for "God Within". So many years ago, I was trained in the methodologies & ideologies of such timeless great thinkers and achievers: Dale Carnegie, Napolean Hill, Og Mandino and many others from this short lived club that was based in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, but had trainers flying in from everywhere. I still have my written notes, and library of books by these authors.
The training I received when just 17 years old has stayed with my through many a storm, and is lacking in today's corporate society and in general.
I would love to hear what happened to my past alumni & instructors who paved a way for me to maintain correct thinking throughout my tumultuous life. I thank them each and every one, and endeavor to keep the flame burning, as it certainly is just a burning ember now. Nevertheless is still burns bright and true within me, whether or not anyone else is able to receive it.

Have attended several presentations classes and once attended Toastmasters through my previous company. However, I really disliked most of those who were attending so dropped out. If there is one in Ohio where many PIs attend, would love to hear about it. Guess the question is, would a regular Toastmasters serve my purpose as a PI.

I am a Dale Carnegie graduate of the Public Speaking and Human Relations of 1977. I used to work for Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh and my branch manager strongly recommended that I attend the classes. I was 24 years old. The course really benefited me throughout my life, as I did gain much more confidence in dealing with the public and in my own personal life.

In our area, there's a local Toastmasters group that meets, my mother graduated to speaker, but left after about 2 years, is it different from the one were talking about for IPIU? and how do i join? I am a very shy person and have never been able to talk out in front of a crowd.
Thanks,
