Which State are you interested in?

First, check out this new gun law site:
http://www.carryconcealed.net/legal/

Second, click here (http://www.ipiu.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?441-Licensing-Laws-Only-Gun-Permits) to see if you state is already listed. If not, then read on:

This is a New Forum, open to the public. If you post here, your first and last name will appear on the Google Search Engine. If that is okay with you, then . . .

Please post a reply in this topic asking which state you are interested in learning more about gun permits. We will then research the state laws, and author a dedicated state topic.

Terry,

I have added Maryland Public Safety Section 5-306 to the list as well as Maryland - PI's Carrying Firearms here:

I hope this helps.

LA,

Are you aware of any states or jurisdictions which don't require private investigators to have a concealed weapon permit, to carry a firearm?

Also, I hadn't noticed until now, but my signature seems to have posted automatically (I didn't check the box to post it.). Would you be so kind as to remove them from my last 2 posts?

Thank-you

LA,

Are you aware of any states or jurisdictions which don't require private investigators to have a concealed weapon permit, to carry a firearm? When I was visiting some of the western and mid-western states I noticed many people on the streets wearing six-shooters and carrying open weapons. I think Idaho is one of those states. Texas also comes to mind where I believe anyone can carry a concealed weapon.

Thank-you Donna,

Also, I remember watching a reality tv show originating in Arizona. There was a man wearing a firearm on the show and there was mention of the ability for anyone to carry. This could be researched for accuracy, but my brother lives there and has confirmed this.

Please Note:
There may be states which allow 'open carry'. Keep in mind, open carry usually means visibly worn. The state may still require a permit of sorts for concealed carry. I urge all members or potential members to verify current laws prior to carrying, using government sources. One mistake could result in felony charges. Although the information on this site is the most accurate I have ever seen, laws can change overnight. The law does not excuse ignorance of a change.

Seemingly fitting in this public forum, I believe a membership with this association greatly increases one's knowledge of laws, better education to understand and interpret laws as well as improving one's research skills. I encourage anyone who has not already done so, to apply for a free level one passcode access to this site to get a better look at what the IPIU can do for you.

It matters less what state your agency is headquartered in if you are a resident in another state.

Also, 97% of all private investigative cases for not require a concealed weapon.

I'm interested in Texas. The way I read the state laws is in order to carry as a licensed PI you must also obtain a Personal Protection (I believe it's considered Level IV Security) License if you are wearing plain clothes. Please clarify this as DPS was quite confusing last time I talked to them.

Randall,

I will research the law and open a thread with a quote. However, other then a simple answer as to whether or not it is possible, I'm not sure how much interpretation I can offer to an appealingly non-fraternal member.

I'll post a link to the new thread, and after that, you can post your questions for a moderator or administrator to answer

Im in California and it seems like an impossible task to obtain a CCW permit regardless of your background. As a former Reserve Deputy Sheriff and with all of my POST certifications in firearms training. I was basically told by my county Sheriff here in Alameda County, that they rarely approve a CCW License and its a two year process!
Does anyone have any input on this, or perhaps a more flexible county within California to obtain your CCW permit?

Does anyone have any input on this, or perhaps a more flexible county within California to obtain your CCW permit? It is a worthwhile 2-year process, so I encourage you to start the journey.

The CWP is generally approved by your local county chief law enforcement officer, which means you could attempt to get another country sheriff to approve it. I recall seeing that Northern California county sheriff's are more lenient in getting the process approved. You could begin your research by calling each county sheriff and just asking their office what the process is. You may be surprised of a quicker process than 2-years.

The other item you can do is upgrade your recent PI Union License purchase to a full annual membership with IPIU (which is as low as $99 a year). This will provide you with basic and advance training, on-the job assignments, and several more areas where one-on-one help can be provided in the members-only area.

Because California is so exspensive..general costs are around $350 and the average length of time it takes to complete an application, 2 years. Does anyone know of any county or city in California that is shall we say "more friendly" on this topic? and might be inclined to authorize permits for P.I.'s? Im in Alameda County and they wont even expedite or do a courtesy permit for me and Im prior Law Enforcment. So, if anyone can help out let me know.
Thanks
