A Chicago police officer shot a boy who allegedly pointed a weapon at the officer during a Wednesday night foot chase near the Chicago Housing Authority’s Altgeld-Murray Homes.

Calumet District police were notified of a person with a gun about 10:45 p.m. and responding officers saw several males standing in the 13000 block of South Drexel Avenue., police said in a statement.

Upon seeing police, one of the males fled and a foot chase ensued. During the chase, the subject pulled a weapon and pointed it at the officer, the statement said.

"In fear of his life," the officer shot the subject, the statement said.

Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Mark Payne said a single officer shot a juvenile. The boy’s age was not immediately available.

The boy was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he is in police custody, authorities said. Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight said the boy was transported to the hospital in serious to critical condition.

Nobody else was injured, Payne said.

Payne would not say if the juvenile fired shots at the officer, saying IPRA investigators remained at the scene at 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police said a weapon was recovered at the scene.
