View Full Version : Logging in over and over (Time out Issue)

Hi there! :)

I'm very new to all of this, so I'm not positive that this is the appropriate place to post this. If not, my newbie apology! ;>

I'm having a problem with signing on. I log on to get into the forums, then when I try to reply to a thread I started, it makes me log on again (at which time, if I already typed in my reply, it disappears!). It almost seems like there is some sort of timeout? Because I don't have this problem if I type my reply first in Notepad, and then quickly cut-n-paste-n-submit. :D

Also, if I want to Preview my reply, same problem as above. :(

And also again, the smiley buttons don't seem to be working for me. I'm actually manually typing the emoticons to get the faces, which I don't mind doing, but I don't know the ascii equivalents for some of the icons. (letter, arrow, idea, triangle warning, sunglasses, thumbs up/down).

Lynne,

Not being someone who speaks the computer language very well, I'll leave the technical issues to someone more qualified. However, in the meantime you might find some help in the replies people gave me when I was having problems with log-on stability. To access the thread click here: Having problems with Log-On stability (http://www.ipiu.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2555)

Good luck. :)

It sounds like you may have chosen not to accept cookies, so you are not staying logged in.

I do not know your knowledge of computer skills, and I mean no offense if these are basic.

Click on the User CP button. It looks like this. http://www.ipiu.org/forums/images/top_profile.gif

Choose the Edit Options link.

The third question down is "Browse Board with cookies?" This needs to be marked yes. If it is marked no, that is your problem.

If it is marked yes, and you are still having problems, please post again here. Usually this covers the problem. :)

You can see by the link Kathy posted above that there has been similar problems! ;)

I see Bill beat me to it. :) I was in the middle of typing exactly what he suggested when everything froze up and I had to shut down and start all over. Before I could get back here he had beaten me to the punch.

One thing to look at is the bottom of the screen. You will see a blue box with FORUM RULES above it. Inside are several listings such as "You may post new threads/replies" and such. Check to see if you are allowed to post replies. Also, see if the Smilies option says ON. They should be enabled. If not, that's your problem. You can check the options in the User CP Edit Options menu and change what needs to be changed. Perhaps that will help. If if doesn't or you need some more help, post a reply and we'll see where to go from there.

I fixed your settings for you. :)

I see by your interests that you are a software developer, and perhaps you had second thoughts about the cookies necessary to remember your settings when you first applied online.

Try it now!

PS: Don't worry about our cookies. They are secured and your password is encyrpted.

Great! Thanks, everyone!

You were right about the cookies, I'm very picky about which cookies I accept. ;)

Also, now I see that the little table of smilies is available in the reply section, it wasn't before. I was trying to us the icons in the Message Icon, haha! Not having the reply table smilies visible to me before in the "Your Reply" section, I tried everything to get those smilies on top to land down here!

Thanks again for all of your help. :)

The problem with logging in over and over is back. :(

I had to completely reinstall my operating system and 6 hours worth of previously installed patches last night (due to downloading a trojan remover that turned out to inadvertently BE a trojan, and it overwrote some of my system .DLL's  ).

Could this have had something to do with loosing the settings?

Your forum settings cannot be changed except by you.

But loosing the settings is more likely found in reinstalling your Windows and Explorer (which has other settings to remember your cookies and password.)

You may wish to contact your Internet Providers free support line and have the tech go over all of your browser settings again.

Good question. From an Information Technology standpoint, normally you would receive a timeout problem on secure (https:\\) websites. The reason for that is security is maintained by not having someone log onto the website using http security mechanisms and then walk away from their computer for an extended period of time. That would allow someone else who is not authorized on that website to do whatever they wanted using your secure login. However, the IPIU website does not appear to be using (https) technology while browsing the forums, even though you are required to sign-in initially.

However, even though the website is http, it can be using https technology to secure the pages like in the forums area. That could be the explanation that is causing the issue.

Hope this helps.

When I try to post a reply I have had my login expire. This has happened several times over the past few days. I have to log back in and my post is lost. Is there a timeout period that automatically logs you out for apparent inactivity?

Thanks!

Joe,

The same thing has been happening to me lately. Matter of fact just the past couple weeks. I thought it might of been me, well maybe NOT! Hmmmm

When I logged back in - and finished my post I submitted - then I had two. Go figure. Don't have an answer.

Just wanted you to know you are not the ONLY one. :)

Always nice to know you're not alone.

I haven't had any duplicates yet, but the day is still young!

Replying to my own thread may be bad form, but . . .

I've also experienced automatic logoffs after reading a page of posts then clicking through to the next page. It's getting a little aggravating to have to login every time I move from page to page or try to post.

Any answers out there?

Thanks again!

Joe, I merged your post, and replies into this thread about the same issue. I merged another thread about this same issue into this one, also. Now all the information is together. Reading the posts in this thread will help you, I think. I would say your timeout issue has to do with the setting on your home computer. I hope this will help. Good luck in all you do. ;)

Have a wonderful weekend. Take care. :)

This post is a couple of years old and the "Browse Board with cookies?" question does not appear when I go to the edit options link. Have things changed?

I checked my home computer settings and as far as I can tell there's nothing there that should be logging me out automatically. Any other suggestions?

(By the way, I do cut and paste and that has actually prevented the logouts!)

Joe, did you read Legals post, post #11? When I changed internet providers to cable, I had to call my cable company, to changed some firewall settings. This was some time back, but I didn't have any problems after that. If you are behind a firewall, that could be causing the problems. I hope this will help. ;)

Have a wonderful week. Take care. :)
