The investigator's role in California as it pertains to insurance claims investigation has taken on some major changes in the past year, specifically as of October 7, 2005.
Per the State of California Insurance Commissioners office, all insurance carriers and third party administrators (TPA's) are required to have an SIU (Special Investigative Unit) on board as of October 7, 2005.
This would also include insurance defense firms who serve as " general counsel" to the carrier.
With the recent general reform of California's workers compensation statute, the reform has generated new opportunities for many " seasoned" claims adjusters who are now in a position to get away from the mad house claims desk and interview for SIU positions that before, were just not available unless you had prior law enforcement experience as an investigator or detective. The mind set and law enforcement requirement has changed "somewhat" but not totally. From what I am hearing and seeing from the inside, major changes will take place in the SIU requirements. First, all SIU and independent private investigators and investigative firms that serve as the carriers SIU will be required to have insurance certifications and designations. This is a good thing because now the bar has been raised for all investigators to have and hold the very same licensing and certification requirements. Most if not all of your " seasoned claims adjusters" hold insurance certifications and designations. I believe the adjuster and investigator should hold those certifications and designations. After all, you are doing insurance claims case work.
I think what you will see is many PI firms that make their living handling insurance claims will suddenly realize that surveillance (Sub Rosa) experience is just not good enough. Especially if the state commissioners office or the client raises the bar. The PI firms and training school management must have the insight and foresight to change and educate themselves and their investigative staff on all disciplines of insurance principles and insurance law.

I am 53 years old and thinking about getting my membership here. I have prior law enforcement and security experience and presently retired as a pastor. This sounds exciting.
