Well, I have just received my Operations Manual. I have been reading thru it the last 2 days. I have found it to be very informative. Who ever did the manual, hats off to them.
I have learned a lot just in the past 2 days and am sure I will learn a lot more. It also has made me even more interested in investigations, if that is possible, after reading it. I'm on my 2nd time reading it and even my wife has been reading it and found it interesting.
Keep up the good work. I hope to get start soon.
Thank you,
Carl

Carl, it's good to have you here, especially with a compliment in hand. :)
The manual evolved some years ago when IPIU's process did not include the manual. IPIU used to assign all agents from credentialing to agencies. Then the agencies all got together and wrote the manual to save training time on the most asked questions.
Later, the Code of Ethics was included because some agents were of the sort that they need to be trained on how to behave. ;)
Again, welcome. And THANKS for your compliment. Maybe your wife will team up with you on a future assignment. (Ask Jim Walters about this ;) ).

Thank you for your reply. It's so good to know that you and others read our comments and questions. We all need to have a place to go to have some questions answered and yes, maybe to just leave a comment.
I for one, real appreciate all of you out there helping people like me trying to get into another area of work. I'm sure with the help from you and others, a lot more people will be on their way to a new career.
Once again, thank you.

Hi, Carl! Hi, David!:)
I would like to join this small team and say the same thing:Operations Manual Is Great!.
As you said, David, it is a very good idea to provide anybody joining this career with such a Manual. It definitely offers the basics, and goes even a little further. When I say "further", I mean "Chapter 4", which is of a tremendous importance. Everything in this Manual is important, but "Chapter 4" is essential to the work of any PI. We are humans working with other humans on special situations. At least a half of our success as PIs is based on that type of skill, which if we do not have developed enough, we have to do everything possible to develop properly. I was really delighted while I read it. It's tough to do it because it envolves a certain type of mind chess, but it's good to know to do it. I am not an expert, but I could add one idea there based on my personal experience. I am confident that one day I'll have this opportunity.
In fact, the great value of this Manual is represented by something else. I still recall after so many years of something said by one of my teachers while in the High School (History teacher). He was not happy at all with the students' answers, and so, he said to us: "Do you know what your problem is? Let me give you the answer: YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO LEARN!" He was so right. The tendency we have at an early age, and some of us even later, is to be superficial and not well organized when we do something. There are several causes that might bring us to this, but when it is about learning, we have to know how to learn. And this is the great plus of this Manual. It is devised in a way that even if we would have the tendency to go over it in a kind of superficial manner, it brings you to the point or heart of the matter. It's analytic and synthetic at the same time, plus "it puts your mind on rods".:D ;) I read it twice, and there are there things that I already know. But I'll read it again, and I know why. Besides, I hardly wait to download the new chapters from your website when the time will be. It's all about steady work, and not being superficial.
I would like to thank to and congratulate all those who brought their contribution to this Manual.http://www.ipiu.org/forums//images/5stars.gif They did a great job, and I am sure that this is only the beginning.
Wish you all have a great week.:)

Carl and Carmen,
I'm with you on the manual. It's written in layman style, which makes it easy to understand and absorb. Those that are new to this field will learn a lot, while the experience will get a refresher course. I enjoyed the section about Interrogation the most. Last but not least, there's the catalog. Ahh, so many books, so little time!
Happy reading everyone!

I agree with everyone on the manual. I think the best part about it is it's written clearly and concisely. I don't think it could be any more simpler to understand. Very easy reading, but also enjoyable. The page layouts are organized extremely well. For anyone who has not received theirs yet, it's not a textbook full of blah blah blah. Consider it a handy reference guide you will refer to in the future.

Carl,
Once you decided to take the road to being a PI you made the decision to never stop learning. There will always be something new around the corner or a new way to do something.
I agree with you. the Operations manual is an awesome manual. I take it to my security job with me and look through it regularly. There are also many other books out there that can offer very good information as well.

I couldn't agree more! The life long learning opportunities is what truly motivates me and keeps me plowing ahead! To be all I can be!
I've been somewhat scarce about the forums in the last two weeks but thought I'd drop in and see what's going on. I was especially interested in what everyone had to say about the training manual. Why? Because I just received my photo ID, COE and other documents in the mail! I'm finally official! The training manual is my very next stop! I'll be making the forum rounds as much as possible and look forward to your views on this long awaited training tool! So, for all those still waiting, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Success to all and to all a good night!

That is such good news, Sandy! :)
I'm so pleased for you and the forward mobility. Missed having replies from you, and I'm so glad you did this one. I know exactly what you are experiencing, since it was only a few heart-beats ago that I was there. :p You will absolutely love the Manual. It is packed full of great information, suggestions, and direction. You will "take the little book and eat it up". It will not make your belly bitter. ;)
So, I guess its upward and onward! Keep up the good work, and patience, and it will be here before you know it. ;) All the very best!
I start my F.T. pos. next Monday, with orientation. I guess, after all, I am a little apprehensive, but it should pass. I need to have a Mantu test (trust I spelled that correctly). I'll be working in a hospital. -- You know "Code Blue!

My, My! If it isn't my old friend TJ! I've truly missed your sun filled comments as well! Thank you for your encouragement. I look forward to eating the manual in one gulp but I know I'll have to consume it in small bites. Either way, it's good to know that it will not be bitter to my stomach. I've read (somewhere) that certain books can have that affect (:))
Aren't you full of good news! You are on the Code Blue team! That is fantastic! I'm sure you'll ace your test and overcome every obstacle so I'm not worried at all! On the contrary, I'm thrilled for you! What a worthwhile way to spend your time!
My assignment is going well and my boss is great! I stayed up too late last night so I was less than 100% today but I'm crashing early tonight. I even received a call from another agency with an upcoming possibility when the current assignment ends. Tis the busy season, after all! The client is quite choosey and is willing to pay top rates for the right person. I hope to make the list! Now, if I can only find more time for my coursework, I'll really be on a roll!
It's always good to hear from you. All my best. Stay in touch!

That's one of the very nicest things about the IPIU family. I've learned so much from my peers in the forums that I look forward to sharing more meaningful information with them. Your comments are so sweet and uplifting. You are quite the charmer. What's this about a team of one  We're with you! Besides, your employer chose you from numerous candidates to perform a needed service. The fact that you represent an entire department merely confirms the trust they have in you and your abilities. After reading your post today, I went back and read mine again and discovered that more that anything else I misspoke, (or in this case mistyped) anyway, all is well and I want to thank you for your comments.
I will be introducing myself in the New Member's Introduction Lounge shortly. I wanted to get a feel of this so I could give a proper introduction and not some off the wall nonsense.
I have noticed that the IPIU "family" members are there to help, and at times, I'm just amazed at the helpfulness of everyone.

David,
That's very interesting as to how the training manuals actually came about.
Fascinating to hear of the support to IPIU.
The fact that IPIU's affiliates came together to put forth such a manual is quite a testament of faith held in this family. That to me, tells alot about IPIU's quality and reputaion. I am so glad to be a part of this family. Thank you for sharing that information David.

I read a few rave reviews on the manual. Having been an educator/trainer for the last quarter century, I appreciate good training and operating documentation.

I don't think you will be disappointed. I think the manual is excellent. It is filled with very usable information. I know the waiting is hard. But you need not feel alone. Virtually every member has gone through exactly what you are going through now. (myself included). :p
Would you believe I started out in life to become an educator. I was to instruct in electronics. I ended up in electronics, now in Video Conferencing. You just never know.

I think I was as excited as you are when I received my manual and test.
Can you ever remember being that excited to study for a test when you were in school? I remember saying that to myself when my manual came! I told myself, "Hey, wait a minute...How come you weren't this excited about taking a test when you were 15?" LOL
Just wanted to drop by and wish you luck on the test! ;)

Diane, Donna, Michael,
Thanks so much for the encouragement!
You are so right, Donna, I can't remember ever being as excited about taking a test in high school! :D I guess we live and learn.
I remember reflecting on my grandfather and his character and life after he passed away a couple years ago, and the conclusion I came to is that it virtually takes an entire lifetime to gain the wisdom you really should have had at the beginning of your life. And then just when you are about where you need to be, it is gone "in the blink of any eye". The key, I believe, is to come to this conclusion early enough in your life so that you can be a benefit to others. . . something very few people do. I clearly remember part of the prayer Grandpa used to say before a holiday meal, and it included the words "help us to be mindful of the needs of others".
You guys are right on track! I really appreciate your kind words.

I never really remembered my grandfather (the other set was dead long before I was born), but my mother's mother was around until I was in my late twenties.:(
Sometimes our elders dispensed great wisdom and we did not pick up on it for years.:o I know that many things that guide my life were things my grandmother said -- it was just a part of her.:(

About your Grandfather...it's wonderful that you have a warm memory of him, and that he was wise and thoughtful. All of my grandparents had passed before I was born, but my Great-grandmother lived until I was 12. I have to confess that I had a case of Ageism when I was young; I only saw her about once a year and wasn't used to an older generation. I often think of all the rich things I could have learned from her, especially about her homeland of Greece. For many years I was filled with regret over this. Then I realized that I should not look to the past, but appreciate now the things I learn from others, regardless of age. So I guess I learned something from her after all...maybe the one thing that was most important in making me who I am. :)
And...here's hoping that as PI's, we will be making a living helping others!
Again, good luck, and have a great weekend! (I'm sure you'll be busy reading!)

You did indeed learn something from your grandmother, Corinne. And someday you will pass this on to your own children and grandchilden. If not for your own, there are many children out there who need mentors that you can be a blessing to . . .

Just like last year, and the year before, today was a beautiful New York late summer day...
My locality, the county and thereabouts, lost 62. The small town of Middletown, NJ lost 54. The FDNY lost 343. Even people like me, who lost no one directly, still lost more than most of us can ever explain...
The only words are unimaginable, irreparable loss....
Last year, a lot of people were barely starting to mourn, it was such a shock. I barely remember last year. This year, I kept bursting into tears from about 8:40 on, until about 10:30, when I pulled onto 10th Avenue facing downtown. The towers used to be there, in that view. It's still so weird they're not...

Thanks for the kind words. It all hurts so much it feels more like I'm not the "helper," but somehow part of the "helped." I know I make a difference because people tell me so, but it seems so inadequate...

Thanks for your insight into the manual. I look forward now, even more, to receiving mine.
I also have uncovered (in the forums) the fact that regardless of when you got your manual, the updates to the new material as well as new versions of old chapters, are avaialbe from the office, and on line as well, so that everyone always has the most up to date information avaialble. That, in of itself, gives me great confidence in the organization I have recently attached myself to.

Jason,
That is an excellent question. I know that this new career is very exciting. It takes about 3-4 months to complete everything. Now of course you have to remember the holidays with the mail being very slow. If you do everything by credit card it will also speed up the process. If you write checks, it takes 2-3 weeks longer. I hope that I have helped out some.

Thank your for the quick response. I really want to fax my exam in, but most of my exam was almost impossible to read because it was faded. I don't want them to look at it and grade it wrong because they can not read what I faxed. I am glad that you received an award as well. My husband was so proud of me.:p I will probally mail my results in. I don't want there to be any problems reading the results. Good luck with your test!

Thanks for the reply. Wow 3-4 months huh. Thats snail mail for ya. Well I used my credit card so far to pay for placement so I should be getting my first packet next week. I'll have to get them out asap.
So do you work as a PI full time now? If so how long did it take to get your name out there and get enough work to go full time?
Kisha Drill
12-05-2003, 11:46 AM
Jason,
I really wish I worked full time. However, I have had no assignments yet. But of course I am still a level 3. Once I get to level 4 I can begin work. I am very excited about starting.
That is really good that you used your card for the initial set up. It will cut off about 2-3 weeks of waiting. The first few steps seem to fly by because you are so busy in the forums, but when you are waiting for the exam and the results, it seems to drag. When you start getting the paper work, take your time and fill it out. You don't want to make mistakes and have to wait for a month to do it over.
Remember not to get to frustrated or overwhelmed. We are all here for you. For we have all been in the same place you are in right now. Please feel free to ask questions. I will help answer them the best that I can. If I can not answer them, someone will. I hope you have a warm and safe weekend.

Jason,
I know what you mean. They don't throw the items away anymore. I know that they used to and I had gotten a few items that way. Now they mark the prices down really low and if no one buys them, they make them defective. I would buy one of the really cheap ones, but I would rather wait and get a nice one that will get more use out of it. Plus I want to be able to play my computer games and most of the cheap computers don't have very good graphics or are not expandable to where I want a computer to be. No point in settling when I will get an awsome computer in a few months. Well I hope you have a great day.
Jason Fischer

Yeah thats true. I am the same way with computers. I only use them for e-mail and games. I might get my cousin to build one for me because he could do it much cheaper and it would be a better computer than you could buy in any store.

Jason,
You are right about that one. However, they don't hold the same warranty one from a store would have. Our warranty protects against power surges. And other stuff of course. But I wouldn't be able to get that from someone building me a computer. Oh well.

Jason,
Yes they sure do. Well I do hope Santa brings you some sort of computer for Christmas. If not, you might want to give him a call. Lol. Have a great weekend.

Jason,
That is truely funny. Yea there are a few things I would like to ask him to. Have a Merry Christmas if I don't talk to you before then.

After I took my test I went back through the manual a couple of times. The manual is full of information and I find that as I do more assignments, I understand certain parts better than when I first read it.
Kudos to the team that put this together. Its an easy read but not over simplified.
