View Full Version : IPIU Membership got me an extra $2/hour Raise!
Eloisa Mooney

Just wanted everyone to know how important it is to keep your resume update with your International Private Investigators Union Assignments and Membership Activity!
I recently applied for a position with one of the Agencies IPIU refers us to in the Level 4 member forums. I was given a quick call and an interview with the hiring manager who happened to mention that "my resume stuck out". I prompted him for what it was that caught his eye. He said he noticed the IPIU referred assignments I had included in my resume, and he wanted to know if I was still available for work.
He offered me the regular pay, PLUS an additional $2 more per hour. :)
That extra $2 per hour (for just one monthly check alone) more than pays for my entire IPIU yearly membership!
Take it from me, the International Private Investigators Union will pay off for you too! :)

To all who found my post, read it and took the time to respond back because you were either inspired or you found a little something called "Hope", don't give up.
This interview was such an eye opener for me about how hungry our communities and towns are for people with integrity and honesty. The interviewer said that many times during our session.
Keep taking those assignments from the International Private Investigators Union and adding them to your list on your resume, even the little assignment that may only have taken you 30 minutes to complete. They all add up and speak about how willing you are to learn.
Enjoy your journey here!

I have a question!
My resume is saturated with nothing but Information Technology (IT) related data since the last 20 years have been nothing but IT. I did work in Law Enforcement (LE) during this time as well working both jobs as an Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) and Computer Programmer.
I am not the RESUME guru and would like any suggestions on how to incorporate my LE and PI employment into my resume to also show my Military background. I want to make sure when I interview with perspective Agencies/Firms that I "WOW" them.
Thanks!

Steve,
I hear you. I lived the same life of IT and it shows on my resume. I will tell you that leaving some of the important pieces of IT on your resume is a good thing for PI type interivews just based on an interivew I just went through.
My hiring manager told me that anyone who has some IT experience listed on their resume shows that they are acustom to looking for different avenues to complete a project.
The manager who interviewed me was an ex-police officer who was now doing the hiring and I took his words as a gift.

Sophia,
You will do fine. You can put the fact that you are "A Member of the International Private Investigators Union (IPIU)" on your resume before you have received any assignments. It shows you are in the process of learning here at IPIU and will shortly be at the assignment phase.
Good luck to you.

Adonieve,
Yes, it does seem like a long road, but it really isn't when you have the support and encouragement of the other members. Everyone in the Private Investigators Forums has played a part in helping me in my quest to be a private investigator, and I am almost to my 1st assignment! I am so excited.. that is if I passed the test. lol
You all can do this too!

Adonieve,
I agree with Denise, the road does seem shorter due to the attention you get from your online support team, mentors and other member trainees who are coming online all the time to check out IPIU's Forum Material. Being anxious might make it feel longer, but that is a nice kind of excitement we all felt walking in the front door.
Feeling that is a very good thing.

From the moment I started this process, I knew that Private Investigating was were I was suppose to be, but even with that feeling, there are times that I need words of encouragement and it is nice to read all the positive things happening to people in this field.

To all who have commented and sent me more blessings than I can count, "Thank you".
I have had such good luck by putting on my resume: IPIU Member since April 2004, I have completed (example of number) of assignments to date. I am certified as a (example only) Federal Anti-Piracy Investigator (example date). Background check and fingerprint card have been completed as of (example date).
I have been getting calls from companies that need someone who has a clean background and this information included in my resume is an eye catcher.
Please know that the above paragraph is informational only and offered to you as an idea only should you decide to also put this information on your resume.

This is in reference what has been "Edited."
I did not ask the name of the agency. So how can my general questions about benefits, vacation, 401-k plan be SUPPRESSED as "Level 4 forum questions." C'mon, what is so PRIVATE about mentioning company benefits, unless somebody has been living under a rock or on a deserted island?? I don't BELIEVE my questions were irrespectful.
So can the Editor please stand up and address my ISSUE. INQUIRING MINDS WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE LEARNING...
Susan, there had to be something that pertained to level 4. If you would like to ask the same information in the proper level 4 forum, someone will give you an answer. Other then this advice, I do not have a clue as to what information you wish to find. Good luck in the level 4 forums. ;)

What type of assignments are most of you receiving? I suppose it just varies. ;)
LaTonya,
You are correct, it varies. Almost all of my assignment have been connected to the Agencies that go through IPIU, I have only recently started doing assignments for friends/family who require my help.
The most rewarding two assignments I have had resulted in finding a thief who was stealing and was caught in the act and the other was finding a thief who was hiding and owed a lot of money to mortgage customers. I consider all the other assignments to have been some great training for me that assisted me in my two great catches.
So far my journey has been great and I love this work.

Peter and David,
The above information (as simple as it may appear) is on my resume right after my personal information. This forum is set up for testimonials only and getting into resume set up/writting is in another forum.
The information I provided on my resume to potential was set up by me to let them know that "Yes I am a trainee but I have already gone through a screening process by IPIU and I have taken on various types of assignments". This was the eye catcher for employers. And because I had invested in my own future by aquiring a Union Memebership through IPIU it showed I had a steak in the process.
Hope this helps.

You are all welcome. Just wondering how many of you have actually put the fact that you have a membership with IPIU on your resume? It was the reason my resume stuck out and it single handedly pushed me over the top for the hiring manager reviewing the stack of applicants. Who knew my membership would mean so much? Who knew the hiring manager knew of IPIU, but he did.
It boils down to this, my membership showed I "invested" in myself and it carried enormous weight when I was compared to the other applicants.
That was priceless!

Thanks Shane. Getting a membership with IPIU is totally optional for you but it helped me to have one when I went to apply for a job with one of the agencies. Think it over, but there are no negatives to being a member, only positives.
Once I became a member, I also signed up for the "Colorado Program" which may shuffle more assignments my way along with a solid connection to an investigative firm that allows me to put their name, address and phone number on my business cards and have access to a secretary and a conference room.

Add the fact that you have a membership with IPIU to your resume, along with general topics of your assignments and "you" keep it updated. As you begin networking with local attorneys, the public and referral groups you will have it to pass out when they look to you for your services.

Lastly, I agree with you totally about including a "COMMENT" about being an IPIU associate. I had an interview this week and the firm was quite impressed when I stated I completed training and exam with the International Private Investigators Union IPIU ... so we keep learning from each other.
All my best,

Always an important thing to keep your resume updated with your current information. I was just thinking about this the other day. I added the IPIU under my Honors and activities section. This could speak volumes once I get started. Thanks to all for the helpful information as us new folks read the various forums.

That's a great idea Nicole. I hadn't thought of that at all. I will certainly be making an addition to my resume now.
Thanks!

Eloisa
Eloisa,
What are the IPIU referred assignments and how does one get one? I am a newcomer and am very lost.
thanks,
Darlene Vinyard

Why don’t why I don’t have access to a lot of informational forums? I have no access to any forums other then new assignments? Please give me access to everything that should be available to a licensed PI.

If an additional $2 per hour over the stated hourly compensation doesn't motivate most of us here, I'm not sure what would. You only have to read this thread, the encouragement and congrats from the members, all of the questions and even the sort of "glowing" comments by some of the "newbies" is WONDERFUL. Your testimony and all those who added to this topic certainly made me *:)* today!
