Your best course would be to contact several Loss Prevention Companies listed in the yellow pages, and then inquire from a "client perspective" about any licensing they have.
Remember, the only need for a license in most states is if you are going to publicly advertise and solicite for clients. Otherwise, if you are hired by a company as an employee or Loss Prevention Consultant, there may be no need for a solication license.

Great Question. If you want the actual laws for Michigan I have them, and would gladly mail them to you. E-Mail me with your address. They cost nothing to get. Loss Prevention is covered in there.
In Michigan anybody can do loss prevention. EXAMPLE: If I worked for meijer, according to state law, the only thing I need to do be have the authority to arrest someone in target is to be an employee.
MI state law says any employer or there employees are allowed. Also in MI you actually have to watch & let them leave the store. Even though they may put a cassette in their pocket, according to the MI laws they have the "Abilty to pay for it", but in MI state law... it is illegal to "Conceal" also, which obviously you do not need to leave the store to "Conceal".
In short you do not need a license, but it would help you also. If you have any other questions about MI I know those laws back and forth. Ask me I would be more than honored to help.
Also IMPORTANT POINT: If you are just "Joe Blow" if you will, make sure it is hundred dollars or more, but comon sense being apart of this wonderful organization, acording to MI you are not "Just Joe Blow".
May God Bless You in your involvement with IPIU and your career. Hope to hear from you soon.

Eric - Michigan requires a PI to be licensed. Call the Michigan state police for a telephone number to the Lansing state police licensing unit. The PI license is $200.00 and you have to be bonded. That I know. Renewal is $500.00. I know that too cause I just had mine renewed.
