This is from the 09/29/03 Philadelphia Inquirer. I hope you enjoy it.
Seven Words For City's New Marketing Campaign
The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 7 will roll out a new marketing campaign to attract business to the city, in the model of the "Charlotte USA" national branding campaign that has done well for that North Carolina city.
Charlotte's slogan? "Life.. In Balance."
The Philadelphia chamber branding program will include a new Web site, advertisements, and a new slogan, according to chamber president Mark Schweiker. But all the chamber will reveal about the slogan is that it's going to be seven words.
We put on our haiku hats and our snarkiest dark sunglasses and tried to imagine what those seven words might be:
Philly: Our Wage Tax is Number One
South of New York, North of Washington
The City that Never Sleeps Very Late
Where the Tradition of Pinstripe Patronage Lives
We're Not As Bad As You Think
We're Not As Bad As We Think
Now with 20 Percent More Fruit Filling
Philadelphia: Sort of Drifting Toward the Future
Close to the Pennsylvania and Jersey Turnpikes.
Philly. You got a problem with that?
The City that Really Big Money Forgot
Halfway to Where You Want to Be
The Other City on the East Coast
Dim Future, Perhaps. But Oh, Our Past!
Parking Meter Scofflaws Don't Stand a Chance
Home of the Incredible Shrinking Middle Class
An Emergency Room Conveniently on Every Comer
Here's your Liberty Bell right here, pal!
